The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
