A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
